Violence at Howe Community Park Injures Four People Injured in the Arden-Arcade Area of Sacramento

Officials in Sacramento County are examining a violent incident that took place Saturday evening at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area as authorities were dispersing a large unauthorized gathering of a crowd of several hundred.

How It Started

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies first arrived at Howe Community Park at about 6:30 PM after getting calls of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Shortly after, a second call came in regarding a possible fight happening at the location.

A law enforcement helicopter was sent to survey the area but reported no active disturbance. Nevertheless, it was evident that a crowd of several hundred had packed into the park in an unauthorized manner.

When the Shots Rang Out

Law enforcement personnel worked to disperse the crowd by surrounding the park and making announcements directing the assembled crowd to leave immediately. Roughly 15 minutes were spent for people to comply.

Just as the crowd began to move that 20 to 25 gunshots rang out. Gunfire triggered a stampede. Officers immediately began identifying shooting victims.

Four Gunshot Victims

Ultimately, four victims were located with gunshot injuries. The shooting victims — comprising three men and one woman each apparently in their 20s at the time of the incident — were rushed to Sacramento area hospitals. Hospital staff stated that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one had moderate injuries, and one had injuries classified as minor. Thankfully, all four were expected to survive.

The Investigation

The main crime scene seemed to have occurred on Cottage Way close to the Home Depot store situated at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Investigators identified more spent casings scattered along Cottage Way. Bullet damage were noted in the metal fencing near the nearby Home Depot. These findings showed that a second shooter had been firing southward from along Cottage Way toward the Home Depot. The Home Depot was secured under a brief lockdown during the incident. Crime scene personnel stayed at the location through the early morning hours.

Suspect Vehicle Located

Information obtained over scanner radio traffic indicated that a Kia vehicle had been stopped in Solano County. Four occupants were held for questioning. Deputies were traveling to Solano County to bring the suspects back for questioning. Video that was reviewed made clear that there were two gunmen.
